Guide to Writing Impactful Advocacy Letters

Use this outline to guide you when writing your letter. You can adjust the wording and structure based on your needs; this is just a recommendation to help you get started!

I am also part of a student-led initiative called Next Era Advocacy, where we research social and political issues and write to decision-makers about them. I am reaching out about [issue/topic] because it affects [me / my peers / my community / people in my country] in a way that I believe deserves urgent attention. In [my school / my community / our country], [briefly describe what is happening]. For ex: [1–2 sentences with a concrete example, story, or statistic]. This matters because [1–2 sentences explaining who is impacted and how it affects their lives or opportunities]. From what I have learned, current policy is that [briefly describe the relevant policy, law, or practice, if you can: 'there is no requirement for…,' 'funding is limited for…,' 'students do not have access to…']. However, this still leaves a gap: [explain the problem or harm that remains].
